A Postcard to the Future

What ClearTurn learned from showing up for Vibrant’s youth mental health festival

At first glance, it was a simple idea: a table, a stack of postcards, a few thoughtful prompts and an invitation for young people to write a note to their future selves.

But sometimes the smallest moments are the ones that stay with people.

This summer, ClearTurn had the opportunity to support Vibrant Emotional Health’s Our Vibe Check, a youth mental health festival created by and for young people. The event brought together music, movement, art, storytelling, food, resources and community in a space designed to feel welcoming, creative and anything but clinical.

ClearTurn’s role was intentionally small, but meaningful. We created and staffed a “Future Me” postcard booth where attendees could pause, reflect and write a message to themselves one year from now.

The prompt was simple: What do you want your future self to remember?

Some wrote a few words. Some filled the whole card. One attendee drew a picture. Others sat with friends and talked through what they wanted to say. By the end of the day, roughly 100 postcards had been completed, and somewhere along the way, a small booth became something more.

A moment to pause

Mental health support doesn’t always begin with a big intervention. Sometimes it begins with a low-pressure invitation to write something down, take a breath and imagine yourself a little further down the road.

That’s what the postcard booth created. For many attendees, writing to their future selves felt exciting. For others, it surfaced a harder reality. Some young people weren’t sure where they would be living in a year, so they didn’t know what address to put on the postcard.

That moment stayed with us.

It was a reminder that even the most thoughtful idea has to meet people where they are. Not where we assume they are. Not where we hope they are. Where they actually are.

Marsha Haas, who attended and staffed the booth on behalf of ClearTurn, adjusted in real time. If someone didn’t know where they’d be in a year, she suggested they take the postcard with them, tuck it into a book or keep it somewhere safe. Maybe they’d find it in a month. Maybe in a year. Maybe later, when they needed it.

It was simple, human and exactly the kind of flexibility that makes an experience feel supportive instead of scripted.

The booth worked because it felt personal

The booth stood out. It was bright, colorful and inviting, with lights, balloons and a large arch that drew people in. But the reason people stayed was the activity itself.

It wasn’t a giveaway. It wasn’t a sales pitch. It wasn’t a logo moment. It was a chance to write something private, hopeful or grounding.

Students participated. Social workers participated. Counselors, teachers and community members participated. Some young people shared what they were writing with friends. Others quietly placed their cards in the box. A few adults or mentors wrote cards for young people who didn’t feel ready to write one themselves.

That may have been one of the most moving parts of the day. The booth gave people different ways to participate. They could write for themselves, write to someone they cared about, sit and talk or simply take a card with them. There was no single “right” way to engage, and that mattered.

Seeing the mission up close

ClearTurn works with Vibrant in a business setting, supporting operational work that helps strengthen systems behind the scenes. But being at Our Vibe Check offered something different: a chance to see Vibrant’s mission in motion.

Marsha described the event as warm, high-energy and deeply welcoming. There were panels, painting sessions, a DJ, dancing, food throughout the day and food trucks outside in the evening. Young people were fed, welcomed and supported. No one was made to feel out of place.

Vibrant’s team wasn’t standing on the sidelines. They were in it, talking with attendees, dancing with them and creating the kind of environment where mental health could be connected to joy, creativity and community.

For Marsha, that was the biggest takeaway. Seeing the work up close made the mission more tangible. It connected the operational work ClearTurn supports to the people and communities Vibrant serves every day.

That’s the part you can’t always understand from a project plan, a meeting agenda or a status update. Sometimes you have to be in the room.

Partnership beyond the work

It would have been easy to sponsor the event in a traditional way: put a name on a board, send some swag and check the box. But that wasn’t the point.

The better opportunity was to help Vibrant create a small, memorable experience that fit the spirit of the day. Something youth-centered, reflective and useful. Something that made sense for the audience.

That’s what good partnership should feel like. Not performative. Not overly branded. Not centered on the sponsor. Centered on the people the event was designed to serve.

For ClearTurn, showing up in this way was a reminder that partnership is not only about the work inside the engagement. It’s about understanding what matters to the organization, what they’re trying to build and who they’re trying to reach.

It’s about caring enough to support the mission, not just the project.

The impact continued after the event

At the end of the day, there was an extra pack of postcards left over. ClearTurn donated them to a community center so the activity could continue beyond the festival.

The team there was thrilled. They saw the value immediately and planned to use the cards with the young people they serve.

That may be the best measure of whether the idea worked. It didn’t end when the booth came down. It became something another team could carry forward.

A small thing, done with care

When Marsha summed up the impact of the booth, she said it simply: “It put a smile on their face.”

That’s enough.

Not every act of support has to be big to matter. Not every partnership moment needs to be loud to be meaningful. Sometimes the right contribution is a small thing, done with care, at the right moment, for the right people.

We’re grateful to Vibrant for the chance to be part of Our Vibe Check, and even more grateful for the work they do every day to help people feel seen, supported and connected.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful systems of support start with a simple reminder:

You have a future worth writing to.

At ClearTurn, we help mission-driven healthcare and human services organizations strengthen the systems behind their work, so they can keep showing up for the people who need them most. If your organization is navigating change, growth or operational complexity, we’d be glad to talk.
